Conclusion: This study suggests that strong compliance with nutritional recommendations in midlife is associated in elderly individuals with better verbal memory, which is a cognitive domain that is particularly vulnerable to pathologic aging
and Alzheimer disease. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00272428. Am J Clin Nutr 2011;93:200-10.”
“The pasteurization process of litchi causes thermal texture degradation. In order to optimize the process condition, the thermal firmness degradation kinetics of litchi was studied. Linear regression of first order kinetics-Arrhenius HDAC inhibitor equation and non-linear regression of Weibull-Log logistic model (WeLL) were employed. Fractional conversion technique was also used to examine its effect on improving the accuracy of models. The results indicated that in three thermal treatments find more at 80, 85 and 90 C. the thermal firmness degradation curve of litchi showed a short term shoulder-like increase at the initial heating stage, followed by a decrease and remained a tail-like non-zero equilibrium stage during prolonged heating. WeLL model displayed better accuracy for litchi texture modeling than first order-Arrhenius equation. Fractional conversion technique was effective in increasing the
accuracy of first order kinetics comparable to those of Weibull model. It is concluded that WeLL model can be applied in modeling thermal food texture degradation. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.”
“Patients on hemodialysis (HD) are prone to atherosclerotic cardiovascular complications. In an attempt to determine the significance BMS-754807 supplier of several atherosclerotic and thrombogenic parameters as risk factors for atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) in these patients, we compared two groups of non-diabetic HD patients matched for age and sex, selected according to the absence (group 1, n = 30) or presence (group 2, n = 30) of symptomatic atherothrombotic vascular disease affecting the coronary, cerebral, or peripheral arteries. Duration of HD, primary renal disease (PRD),
presence of hypertension, EPO treatment, and smoking habits were recorded. Serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), HDL-C, LDL-C, TC/HDL-C ratio, lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)), fibrinogen (FG), plasminogen (PLG), fibronectin (FN), and hematocrit (HCT) were measured pre-HD in a midweek session. The same blood parameters were also assessed in twenty matched clinically healthy subjects (controls). None of the blood parameters differed between groups 1 and 2, except for serum Lp(a) and FN, which were higher in group 2 (p = 0.005 and p = 0.041, respectively). Both groups were not different regarding PRD, duration of HD, and EPO treatment, but the presence of hypertension and smoking habits were more common in group 2 (p = 0.008 and p = 0.045, respectively).
